A control method for a hybrid vehicle, comprising: exchanging electric power between a drive motor 1 and a battery 2; charging the battery 2 by a generator 4 driven by an engine 3 for power generation; and treating exhaust gas discharged from the engine 3 by a catalyst, wherein when a state of charge of the battery 2 exceeds a predetermined threshold value due to regenerative electric power received from the drive motor 1, a fuel supply to the engine 3 is stopped to stop power generation by the generator 4 and the regenerative electric power is consumed by supplying electric power from the battery 2 to the generator 4 to perform an electric power running operation (motoring) on the engine 3, and in a state in which a temperature of the catalyst is lower than an upper limit temperature at which deterioration of the catalyst is suppressible, the closer the temperature of the catalyst approaches the upper limit temperature, or the faster a rate of increase in the temperature of the catalyst becomes, the greater a discharge amount of the battery 2 is increased.
