The invention relates to a compressed air generating device (2.9), with an open-loop and closed-loop control unit (28), with at least one open-loop and closed-loop controllable electric motor (24), with at least one air compressor (16; 18) which can be driven by the electric motor, with an air inlet (8), via which ambient air (L) can be sucked into the at least one air compressor, with at least one air cooler (20, 22) which is connected or can be connected to the outlet of the at least one air compressor, with an air dryer (40), the inlet of which is connected to the outlet of the at least one air cooler, with a coolant inlet opening (12), via which a liquid coolant can be fed to the at least one air cooler and to further components of the compressed air generating device, and with a coolant outlet opening (14), via which heated coolant can be discharged from the compressed air generating device. In order for the compressed air generating device to be of as compact and inexpensive configuration as possible in terms of production and of as variable configuration as possible with regard to cooling thereof, it is provided, inter alia, that that air cooler (22) which is arranged as the last air cooler upstream of the air dryer (40) in the flow direction of the compressed air can be flowed through by the coolant first, as viewed in the flow direction of the coolant. Moreover, three external cooling devices (82, 120, 122) which, depending on the cooling requirement, can be utilized alternatively or additively in order to cool the generated compressed air and the existing components can be connected to the compressed air generating device. The invention also relates to a method for operating this compressed air generating device.
