A computer system comprising processing circuitry configured to receive sensor-obtained battery data (60) from at least one battery cell (26) being monitored by a battery management system (20) of a vehicle (10), the at least one battery cell (26) being of a particular type; obtain battery reference data (72) from a plurality of battery reference cells (76) of different types; compare the sensor-obtained battery data (60) to the battery reference data (72), wherein a battery cell modeler (70) is configured to perform the comparing by processing the sensor-obtained battery data (60) and the battery reference data (72); and based on the comparing, determine counterfeit characteristics data (90) indicating that said particular type of the at least one battery cell (26) deviates from a selected type among said plurality of reference battery cells (76) of different types.
