A system and method include a hydraulic system onboard an aircraft (100), a first temperature sensor (316A), a second temperature sensor (316B), and a controller (314). The first temperature sensor (316A) measures a first temperature of hydraulic fluid upstream of an inlet (202) of a pump (200A) of the hydraulic system. The second temperature sensor (316B) measures a second temperature of the hydraulic fluid within a cooling flow stream downstream of an outlet of the pump (200A). The controller (314) determines a value of a temperature rise of the hydraulic fluid across the pump (200A) as a difference between the first temperature and the second temperature, and obtains an expected range (502) for the temperature rise across the pump (200A) based on a speed (503) of the pump (200A). In response to the value of the temperature rise being outside of the expected range (502), the controller (314) generates a maintenance message for communication off-board the aircraft (100), indicating the pump (200A) is degraded.
