A virtual image optical system 105 includes first and second optical elements 102 and 103 each configured to guide light from a display means 101, wherein the second optical element 103 guides the light from the display means 101 to a first pupil 112 to form a first virtual image 113, and the second optical element 103 simultaneously guides the light from the display means 101 to a second pupil 115 to form a second virtual image 116, and wherein decentering of the second optical element enables switching of positions of the first pupil and the second pupil to each other.
