The present invention relates to a feedback actuator (4) for a steering system (1) for a motor vehicle, comprising a steering actuator (5) which acts on steerable wheels (6) of the motor vehicle and which is electronically controlled in a manner dependent on a driver steering input, wherein the feedback actuator (4) has a torque-generating means and is configured to use the torque-generating means to exert a torque on a steering shaft (2) and thus transmit feedback relating to a wheel-road contact situation to a steering means (3). The feedback actuator (4) has a planetary transmission and an electric motor as the torque-generating means, wherein the electric motor mechanically engages with the planetary transmission such that the torque is transmitted from the electric motor via the planetary transmission to a steering shaft (2). The invention also relates to a steer-by-wire steering system (1) comprising such a feedback actuator (4).
