The invention relates to a method for lane change assistance, in which method a motor vehicle travels on a first lane of a road in one direction, there being a desire to change lanes, at least one object in a surrounding region of the motor vehicle in a second lane adjacent to the first lane is identified using surroundings sensors, a position of the at least one object relative to the motor vehicle is determined in terms of motor vehicle coordinates, a course of a lane marking which is in front of the motor vehicle in the direction of travel is determined using the surroundings sensors, a trajectory of the motor vehicle in terms of motor vehicle coordinates is determined on the basis of motor vehicle sensors, an object zone for the at least one object is determined, a motor vehicle zone within which there is risk of collision is determined, the motor vehicle zone being located in the second lane, it is examined whether the motor vehicle zone and the object zone overlap, and, if the motor vehicle zone and the object zone overlap, a signal defining a collision risk is generated, the motor vehicle zone and the object zone being specified in terms of λ-δ coordinates.
