A rotor system for an aircraft (100) includes an open rotor assembly (108) comprising an open rotor assembly (108) comprising a plurality of rotor blades (114) connected to a rotor mast (222), wherein the rotor assembly is tiltable relative to a wing (104) of the aircraft (100) between a first position corresponding to an airplane mode of the aircraft (100) and a second position corresponding to a helicopter mode of the aircraft (100); and a drive system for providing rotational energy to the open rotor assembly (108) via the rotor mast (222). The drive system includes at least one electric motor (202) for generating rotational energy to a motor shaft (204); and a gearbox (208) connected to receive rotational energy from the at least one electric motor (202) via the motor shaft (204) and to provide rotational energy to the rotor mast (222) via a rotor shaft, wherein the at least one electric motor (202) is fixed relative to the wing (104) of the aircraft (100).
