The aim of the invention is to provide a method for an improved wear estimation, considering not only the current thermal state of the brake pads, but also the thermal "history" of the brake pads, thus temperatures, exceeding "maximal continuous application temperature" are considered during the wear estimation. The reason for that is, that the bond resin, incorporated into the brake pad material, is damaged above the "maximal continuous application temperature". In the region of damage, the wear ratio of the brake pad is increased. It means, that during the following brake periods, the brake pad wears at an accelerated rate, in the damaged layer. After the damaged layer wears down, the original wear ratio is present again. Disclosed is a wear estimator device for an element of a friction based braking device, comprising an on-board computing capacity device configured to conduct arithmetic calculations and to be arranged at a vehicle, the on-board computing capacity device being connectable to the friction based brake device, wherein the on-board computing capacity device comprises: a wear factor estimation unit that is configured to determine a wear coefficent (wfactorised) based on properties of the operational circumstances of the friction based brake device, and a wear integrator unit that is configured to determine a wear (W(t)) of an element of the brake device under consideration of the wear coefficient (wfactorised) determined by the wear factor estimation unit.
