In order to identify signal signs (SZ) for the traffic control of track-guided vehicles (FZ, SFZ) in a simple and resource-conserving way, the following is proposed for image-computation-/image-analysis-based identification of the signal sign located at a signal sign position (SZP) along a route (FST) of the track-guided vehicle: - forming a route image path (SBPF) at least on the basis of a route image (P-SB) acquired from a signal sign expectation route region at a vehicle position (FZP), and by using vehicle position information (FZPPT, FZPNT), stored reference route images (RSB) and route image metadata (SBMD) including the signal sign position, and stored route and vehicle data (SFZD); - obtaining an image corridor (BKO) from the route image path using stored signal sign data and using the route and vehicle data, in which image corridor the signal sign to be identified is expected or must be located; - searching through the image corridor step by step, in each step it being evaluated, for the corresponding image of the corridor, how greatly image portions to be examined for the image analysis each deviate, with respect to the signal sign to be identified, from a pictorially known, stored signal sign (SZ'); - evaluating which image portions contain the smallest deviations and, in accordance with this image portion evaluation, determining the signal sign to be identified by consistent comparison of the signal signs (SZ, SZ').
