The method includes - receiving (708), by a vehicle control system (120), an indication that a vehicle is coasting, slowing and/or braking,- based on the received indication, engaging (720), by the vehicle control system, an electric motor (168) coupled to an internal combustion engine (140) to generate electric charge and provide the generated electric charge to the energy storage system, and while engaging the electric motor to generate electric charge, deactivating (724), by the vehicle control system, a cylinder (204) of the internal combustion engine by maintaining an inlet valve (216) of the cylinder and an exhaust valve (224) of the cylinder in a closed position,- after deactivating the cylinder, receiving (738) an indication that the speed of the vehicle is to be reduced, and- based on receiving the indication that the speed is to be reduced, causing (740) the inlet and exhaust valves to move to an open position and maintaining said valves in their open position.
