A battery device (22) is connected with an electrical converter (18) for supplying and/or driving a high power system (10). A method for estimating a state (54) of a battery device (22) comprises: controlling the electrical converter (18) to generate an excitation signal (56) for the battery device (22), wherein the excitation signal (56) is generated for a plurality of frequencies; measuring a current (58) through the battery device (22) and a voltage (60) across the battery device (22) for the plurality of frequencies; determining impedance values (64) of the battery device (22) for the plurality of frequencies from the current (58) and the voltage (60) measured at the plurality of frequencies; estimating the state (54) of the battery device (22) from the impedance values (64).
