There is disclosed a radiation stable shield for use in space or high altitude applications. The shield comprises a plurality of overlapping planar glass flakes which are held in a lamellar matrix of flexible polymeric material. The flakes are each formed of a radiation stable glass which is suitale for use in space or high altitude applications. The flakes are arranged in alignment with the lamellar direction of the matrix.
