An illustrative example method of controlling an elevator system (20) includes detecting a number of passengers (32) waiting for elevator service at a landing (34), detecting an available passenger capacity of a plurality of elevator cars (22, 24, 26, 28), respectively, and assigning at least one of the elevator cars (22, 24, 26, 28) to travel to the landing (34) to provide elevator service to the passengers (32) based on the detected number of passengers and the available passenger capacity of the at least one of the elevator cars(22, 24, 26, 28).
