An optical rain sensor (110) for sensing rain on a transparent substrate, such as a vehicle windshield, is described. The rain sensor includes a printed circuit board, PCB (123), a central light emitting element (112d) disposed on the PCB, and a plurality of peripheral light emitting elements (112a-c) and a plurality of light detecting elements (113a-c) disposed on the PCB and surrounding the central light emitting element. The rain sensor further includes a controller (118) operatively connected to the light detecting elements and the light emitting elements. In a first mode of operation the controller controls the central light emitting element to emit light beams towards a first plurality of sensing areas (124a-c) on the transparent substrate from which the light beams are reflected towards the plurality of light detecting elements. In a second mode of operation the controller controls the peripheral light emitting elements to emit light beams towards a second plurality of sensing areas on the transparent substrate which are different from the first plurality of sensing areas and from which the light beams are reflected towards the plurality of light detecting elements.
