A method (100) for processing wheels (1) of railway vehicles, comprising at least the following steps: (102) providing a wheel (1) of a railway vehicle having at least a base disc (2) comprising a first material; (104) providing at least one coating material (3), said at least one coating material (3) being suitable to be positioned over at least part of an outer surface (6) of the base disc (2) and to form a wearable out contact surface (4) for contacting a rail during operation of the railway vehicle; and (110) realizing a metallurgical bond between the at least one coating material (3) and the at least part of the outer surface of the base disc (2) via a solid-state welding phase using heat generated when bonding the at least one coating layer (3) to the outer surface of the base disc (2).
