A method of rapid inflation of a pneumatic tire (16A-16F) of a vehicle (10) is provided. The method comprises (a) providing on the vehicle (10) a compressed air tank system (22, 24, 26, 28) for storing compressed air, the tank system defining a storage volume; (b) providing on the vehicle (10) an air compressor (20); (c) storing compressed air from the compressor (20) in the tank system (22, 24, 26, 28) at a storage pressure; (d) increasing an inflation pressure of at least one of the tires (16A-16F) of the vehicle (10) from an initial tire inflation pressure (PTIRE0,1) to an intermediate tire inflation pressure (PTIRE2) by communicating the tank system (22, 24, 26, 28) with the at least one of the tires (16A-16F); and (e) further increasing the inflation pressure of the at least one of the tires (16A-16F) from the intermediate tire inflation pressure (PTIRE2) to a final tire inflation pressure (PTIRE3) with additional air from the compressor (20) while isolating at least a portion of the storage volume of the tank system (22, 24, 26, 28) from communication with the compressor (20).
