This sealing device (2, 103) for a propeller shaft (4) of a marine vehicle propulsion unit contains a plurality of sealing lips (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) axially offset relative to each other, with a receiving space (32) for a hydraulic fluid delimited by two adjacent sealing lips (22, 24), at least one buffer space (34, 36, 38) axially offset with respect to the receiving space (32) and delimited by two adjacent sealing lips (24, 26, 28, 30), whereby the sealing device (2, 103) contains suitable feeding means for supplying said buffer space (34, 36, 38) with a buffer fluid. The device (2, 103) contains a sampling circuit able to sample fluid contained in said buffer space (34, 36, 38) and a monitoring device (60) able to check parameters (D liq , 84 , 86 ) of the fluid sampled by the sampling circuit.
