The invention relates to a method for determining the level of attention of a driver of a motor vehicle, particularly comprising the following steps: c3) a target variable of formula (I) representative of an action that the driver should perform on a control member of the motor vehicle is determined, particularly according to an effective position (δ d ) of said control member and of a target position of formula (II) in which the control member should be placed if the level of attention of the driver is high, d) an effective variable representative of a control action of the driver on said control member is acquired, e) said effective variable and said target variable of formula (II) are compared, and f) said level of attention is determined according to the result of the comparison carried out in step e). The invention also relates to an associated method for stimulating the attention of a driver of a motor vehicle.
