The invention relates to a sound attenuator (24, 30) for discharging compressed air from a valve (28) of a compressed air treatment system of a motor vehicle and for attenuating the outflow noises, comprising a housing (40) with at least one inlet opening (50) and at least one outlet opening (52), as well as a noise-reduction material (54) arranged in said housing (40) between the at least one inlet opening (50) and the at least one outlet opening (52), for the purpose of reducing flow noises of compressed air that expands in the housing (40) and flows through the noise-reduction material (54). In order to reduce noise emissions, the noise-reduction material (54) has, in a central region (58) adjoining the at least one inlet opening (50), a higher packing density than it has in an outer region (60) adjoining the at least one outlet opening (52).
