A propeller hydraulic actuation system, in particular a pitch change hydraulic actuation system, is disclosed. The system comprises a double-acting dual chamber hydraulic pitch change actuator (5). The pitch change actuator includes a first pressure circuit (14) having first fluid supply lines (14a, 14b) and a first hydraulic chamber (14c) and a second pressure circuit (13) having second fluid supply lines (13a, 13b) and a second hydraulic chamber (13c). A piston (15) separates the first and second chambers. At least one pressure sensor (17a, 17b) is provided for obtaining pressure measurements from which a load differential (F) applied to the piston by the circuits can be calculated. A closed loop controller (20) is arranged to control the fluid supplied to the first and second pressure circuits, wherein the closed loop controller includes an actuator position loop (22) arranged to utilise feedback on the actuator position to control the actuator position. The closed loop controller also further includes, within the actuator position loop, an inner load loop (23) created utilising the load differential calculated from the pressure measurements obtained by the at least one pressure sensor. A method of controlling the pitch of a variable pitch propeller is also provided.
