An improved self-engaging clutch (40) for a planetary gear winch (10), said self-engaging clutch comprising: a planetary winch (10) having a motor (22), a planetary gear drive (12), a clutch (40) and a drum (24) mounted on a frame, wherein the clutch (40) is capable of engaging and disengaging the drum (24) from the motor (22); the planetary gear drive (12) having a first (14), a second (16) and a third (18)planetary gear set, each gear set having a sun gear (30), a plurality of planet gears (32) each mounted to a planet carrier (34) by a planet pin, the plurality of planet gears orbiting around and engaging with the sun gear (30), and a ring gear (38) surrounding and engaging with the planet gears (32); a clutch (40) having one or more cavities located on an exterior surface of the ring gear of the third gear set (18),a cavity (44) located on the frame adjacent to the ring gear (38) of the third gear set (18) a clutch actuator (54), a clutch actuator finger (52) on the planet carrier (34) of the second gear set and a pin (50) moveable between an engaged position and a disengaged position, wherein the clutch actuator finger (52) is capable of moving the pin (50) between the disengaged position and the engaged position.
