One aspect is a flight control system for independent speed and attitude control (70) of a rotary wing aircraft (10) that includes a main rotor system (12) and a translational thrust system (30). The flight control system includes a flight control computer (75) configured to interface with the main rotor system (12) and the translational thrust system (30). The flight control computer includes processing circuitry configured to execute control logic. A pitch attitude reference generator (102) provides a pitch attitude reference (110) to a main rotor controller (12) to command the main rotor system based on pilot input (112). A longitudinal reference generator (104) produces a longitudinal reference (122) as a longitudinal position or longitudinal velocity based on pilot input. An attitude-to-propulsor crossfeed (106) converts the pitch attitude reference (112) into a propulsor trim adjustment (120). A propeller pitch controller (114) combines the longitudinal reference (122) and the propulsor trim adjustment (120) into a propeller command (134), and provides the propeller command to the translational thrust system (30).
