In an operation-mode switching system for an elevator, a maintenance-operation mode selector switch for switching an operation mode to a maintenance-operation mode is provided in a hoistway. A landing-door opening detection switch is provided to a landing door independently of a landing-door switch for detecting opening and closing of the landing door. The landing-door opening detection switch is turned OFF when the landing door is intentionally opened. A relay for inhibiting normal operation during maintenance is demagnetized when the landing-door opening detection switch is turned OFF to inhibit start of a car. A maintenance operation of the car is enabled by switching the operation mode to the maintenance-operation mode through the maintenance-operation mode selector switch after the start of the car is inhibited by the relay for inhibiting normal operation during maintenance.
