The invention relates to an automatic dimming system and method for a windshield of an aircraft cockpit. The system comprises a photosensitive sensor system, a human eye monitoring device, an airborne computer, a control circuit and an electrochromic windshield. The photosensitive sensor system is configured to detect windshield illumination in real time and transmit the windshield illumination to the airborne computer, a signal processing module in the airborne computer is configured to convert an illumination signal into illumination data, and a data processing module is configured to compare and fit the illumination data with a dimming scheme database to determine a preliminary dimming scheme. The circuit control module is configured to output a driving signal to the control circuit according to the preliminary dimming scheme, and voltage control over the electrochromic windshield glass is achieved by adjusting a variable resistor in the control circuit; the human eye monitoring device is configured to monitor eye physiological feature data of a pilot, and the data processing module is further configured to finely adjust the preliminary dimming scheme to determine a final dimming scheme when the eye physiological feature data exceeds a threshold value.
