The present disclosure provides a "vulnerable road user identification system". A vehicle includes: a human-machine interface (HMI); a light sensor configured to receive a light pulse emitted from the lighting device, where the light pulse includes an original message in a modulation format; in one embodiment, the lighting device includes an HMI configured to receive an original message, a light pulse, and one or more controllers programmed to demodulate the light pulse to obtain the original message, where the original message identifies an object to which the lighting device is attached, convert the original message into a processed message, and output the processed message via the HMI.
