A cruise control algorithm includes receiving a set speed and a minimum speed; generating a first control signal indicative of a first engine torque request; in response to the first engine torque request, controlling the vehicle to maintain a set speed; detecting the pitching degree of the vehicle; detecting a vehicle speed and generating a second control signal indicative of a first engine torque request in response to the vehicle pitch being greater than zero and the vehicle speed being greater than a minimum speed; in response to the first engine torque request, controlling the vehicle to maintain the first engine torque; in response to the vehicle pitch being greater than zero and the vehicle speed being less than the minimum speed, generating a third control signal indicative of a second engine torque request; and in response to the third engine torque request, controlling the vehicle to maintain the minimum speed.
