The device is configured to predict a distance course of the vehicle in a coasting mode starting from a current driving progress of the vehicle and to compare the predicted distance course of the vehicle with a distance of the vehicle and/or a target distance of a speed control. In this case, the predicted distance profile displays a temporal distance and/or a spatial distance of the vehicle from a nearby lane object traveling in front of the vehicle on an adjacent lane as a function of the travel progress. The device is also configured to control the coasting operation as a function of the comparison.
