An autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle detection system for monitoring a geographic area is disclosed that includes an unmanned airship adapted to hover in the air, at least one camera mounted on the airship to scan at least a portion of the geographic area, a position sensor for determining a position of the airship, and a controller arranged to communicate with the airship, the at least one camera, and the position sensor. The controller is configured to position the airship at a desired location in the air based on the input received from the position sensor, and to monitor a geographic area based on the image received from the at least one camera. The controller is further configured to detect a presence of an unmanned aerial vehicle within the geographic area based on the received image, and determine whether the detected unmanned aerial vehicle is an unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicle based on the received image.
