A membrane canister for containing fluids whose temperatures may differ significantly from ambient temperatures, for example for containing cryogenic fluids, where the membrane canister comprises, in the direction from the interior containing volume: a primary membrane which is fluid-tight, faces the contained fluid in operation and acts as a primary fluid barrier; an insulating layer surrounding the film on the outside; an outer structure, such as a hull or bulkhead or other structure, where the outer structure supports the inner insulation layer and the primary membrane and thereby carries the generated forces; and at least one opening for loading and unloading a fluid; and optionally a secondary film that divides the insulation layer into an inner insulation between the primary film and the secondary film and an outer insulation between the secondary film and the outer structure if the outer structure is a steel structure that becomes brittle at low temperature, such as a hull outer structure, the primary film comprises areas of flat, curved or hyperbolic shape and corrugations between the areas, where the areas are fastened to the underlying insulator and the corrugations absorb thermally induced strain. The membrane tank is characterized in that the membrane tank further comprises a coupling portion for operably connecting the vacuum pump to the entire insulation layer or the inner insulation layer for enabling vacuum in the entire insulation layer or the inner insulation layer during loading, containing and unloading of the cryogenic fluid.
