A monocular camera system for a vehicle includes a front monocular camera, a side monocular camera, and one or more controllers in electrical communication with the front monocular camera and the side monocular camera. The one or more controllers execute instructions to determine an ideal lag distance for the vehicle to travel between a current time step and a previous time step when the front monocular camera and the side monocular camera capture the two asynchronous camera frames, and to determine an ideal lag distance for the vehicle to travel between the current time step and the previous time step according to the ideal lag distance. A number of delayed frames captured by the front monocular camera or the side monocular camera between a current time step and a previous time step is determined. The controller determines a direction of travel of the vehicle indicating which of the monocular cameras is selected to provide previous captured frames captured at a previous time step.
