The present invention provides an active material and an electrode capable of realizing a secondary battery exhibiting excellent charge/discharge efficiency and cycle life performance, a secondary battery and a battery pack exhibiting excellent charge/discharge efficiency and cycle life performance, and a vehicle provided with the battery pack. According to an embodiment, an active material including a niobium titanium oxide phase having a monoclinic crystal structure is provided. The niobium titanium oxide phase has a crystal structure in which at least one (Nb, Ti) O6 octahedral site having a bond angle distortion of 0.8 [sigma] 2/deg2 or less is included in a unit cell, said octahedral site being configured so as to share only a vertex. The grain size of the niobium titanium oxide phase is in the range of 85-130 nm (inclusive).
