A tension element for use in a load bearing member of an elevator system includes a first layer having a plurality of first wires and a second layer having a plurality of second wires. The second layer is located radially outward of the first layer and surrounds the first layer. The first layer has a first twist direction and the second layer has a second twist direction. The second twist direction is opposite to the first twist direction.
