The invention relates to a system (40) and a method for determining the position of an elevator car (14) of an elevator installation (10), which elevator car (14) is movably arranged in an elevator shaft (12). The system (40) has a transmitter (25) for emitting modulated electromagnetic radiation having a first modulation frequency as a first output signal, a sensor unit (28) for receiving electromagnetic radiation reflected by an object detected by the sensor unit (28) as a raw measurement signal, and an evaluation unit (30) in communication connection with the transmitter (25) and the sensor unit (28). According to the invention, the evaluation unit (30) is configured to delay the raw measurement signal by a delay time and thereby generate a delayed measurement signal, to determine a first phase shift between the raw measurement signal and the first output signal for determining a second phase shift between the delayed measurement signal and the first output signal, the first phase shift or the second phase shift is selected depending on a selection condition, whereby a position of the elevator car (14) within a section (50a-50g, 62a-62g) of the elevator shaft (12) is determined, and a position of the elevator car (14) in the elevator shaft (12) is determined based on an arrangement of the section (50a-50g, 62a-62g) in the elevator shaft (12) and the position within the section (50a-50g, 62a-62g).
