The invention relates to a circuit arrangement for balancing battery cells, wherein a series circuit consisting of a semiconductor switch and a balancing resistor is connected in parallel to the battery cells. A series circuit formed by the first resistor, the balancing switch and the second resistor is connected in parallel with the semiconductor switch and with the balancing resistor, the first connection of the first resistor is connected with the source connection, and the second connection of the first resistor is connected with the gate connection of the semiconductor switch. A voltage divider composed of a first resistor and a second resistor is determined as a function of a gate-source voltage required for switching on the semiconductor switch, and a value of the first resistor is determined as a function of a required current limit by the first resistor in the event of a short circuit. An evaluation unit of the circuit arrangement is configured to close the balancing switch depending on a current balancing demand of the battery cells, such that a gate-source voltage is provided at the semiconductor switch by means of the voltage divider, which gate-source voltage is configured to close the semiconductor switch for balancing the battery cells by means of the balancing resistor.
