The invention relates to a system (40) and a method for determining the position of an elevator car (14) of an elevator installation (10), which elevator car (14) is movably arranged in an elevator shaft (12). The system (40) has a 3D-sensor (26), an evaluation unit (30) which is in communication with the 3D-sensor (26), and a marking element (36) which actively emits electromagnetic radiation. The 3D-sensor (26) has a plurality of sensor units, and the evaluation unit (30) is configured to determine a distance of each sensor unit to a portion of an object detected by the 3D-sensor, said portion being detected by the sensor unit, by means of measurement data received from the 3D-sensor (26). The 3D-sensor (26) is arranged such that the 3D-sensor detects the marking element (36) and the area around the marking element (36) as objects. The evaluation unit (30) is configured for determining those sensor units that detect the marking elements (36). The evaluation unit is further configured to determine the position of the elevator car (12) on the basis of the determined distances to the detected objects of the sensor units and/or of a plurality of sensor units arranged in a region adjacent to the sensor units.
