The present disclosure provides for detecting thermal events using voltage springback of battery cells connected in parallel. A method for detecting a thermal event of a battery, such as a traction battery of an electrically powered vehicle, includes monitoring a voltage of a set of parallel connected cells of the battery. In response to confirming that the voltages of the pack have voltage springback, a thermal event of the battery is detected. The detection of the thermal event may also depend on the detection of a deviation in another operating parameter of the battery, such as temperature or pressure.
