A stiffening beam for an automotive component is continuously formed from a metal sheet rolled to have at least one tubular portion extending along the length of the stiffening beam. A solid state forge weld is formed between an edge of the metal sheet and a middle portion of the metal sheet to close a seam extending along the tubular portion of the stiffening beam. Selected portions of the metal sheet are heated to a desired weld temperature with a high frequency current delivered through electrical contacts to opposite sides of the weld before forming the solid state forge weld. A desired weld temperature may burn off a zinc coating on a metal sheet at selected portions prior to forming a solid state swaging weld that is generally free of zinc inclusions.
