The invention relates to the field of defect detection, in particular to an elevator traction steel belt defect detection device and method, and the method comprises the following steps: starting preparation, data acquisition, point cloud data judgment, point cloud data processing, feature extraction, overrun judgment, elevator stop judgment, defect judgment and result storage. Rapid detection of surface defects of the elevator traction steel belt is achieved through the laser contour sensor. High-frame-rate data collection is adopted, and a large amount of data can be rapidly obtained in the back-and-forth process that the elevator runs from the highest position to the lowest position and returns. A computer is used for real-time data processing and analysis, and defects are judged through a specific algorithm, so that the surface defects of the elevator traction steel belt are detected in a short time. The labor cost and the time consumption are reduced through the automatic detection process; by discovering and processing the defects such as abrasion and cracks on the surface of the elevator traction steel belt in time, the risk of faults occurring in the elevator running process can be reduced, and potential safety hazards are reduced.
