The invention relates to a method for controlling a brake system of a motor vehicle, comprising hydraulically actuatable wheel brakes and a linear actuator and a pump as electro-hydraulic pressure generating devices, according to the method, during the braking process of the motor vehicle, a parameter describing the actual behavior of the braking system of the motor vehicle is monitored and compared with a stored threshold value, in the event of a specified deviation between the monitored parameter and the threshold value, the linear actuator and the pump are switched to be operated synchronously, and the linear actuator and the pump are switched to be operated in the event of a specified deviation between the monitored parameter and the threshold value. The linear actuator and the pump are operated at the same time and brake pressure is applied to the hydraulically actuatable wheel brake via the linear actuator and the pump. The invention is characterized in that the current volumetric consumption of the linear actuator is determined as the parameter describing the actual behavior of the brake system of the motor vehicle.
