A vehicle control device provided with: a front camera (12Fr), a rear camera (12Rr), a left camera (12L), and a right camera (12R) that acquire identification data of the outside world of a vehicle (10); a touch panel (42) that accepts designation of a prescribed parking position from a user of the vehicle (10); and a method for operating the vehicle (10) on the basis of the identification data of the outside world and the prescribed parking position and an automatic parking control unit (55) that performs automatic parking control for parking at a predetermined parking position and registers the predetermined parking position as a designated parking position. An automatic parking control unit (55) registers a feature point relating to a designated parking position on the basis of a plurality of time period patterns based on external illuminance calculated from external identification data.
