The invention relates to a method for determining whether an automatic collision avoidance steering should be performed. The method includes obtaining a predicted vehicle trajectory, the predicted vehicle trajectory including a predicted lateral acceleration and a predicted lateral acceleration rate of change of the vehicle along the predicted vehicle trajectory; obtaining a first threshold value of reachable transverse acceleration and a second threshold value of reachable transverse acceleration change rate of the vehicle; determining whether the predicted vehicle trajectory is reachable by comparing the predicted lateral acceleration to a first threshold and comparing the predicted lateral acceleration rate of change to a second threshold; in response to reachable, communicating to a control system of the vehicle that an automatic collision avoidance steering should be performed; in response to the unreachable: determining a lateral offset of the vehicle; responsive to the lateral offset being less than or equal to a third threshold, communicating that an automatic collision avoidance steering should be performed; in response to the lateral offset being greater than a third threshold, an automatic collision avoidance steering should not be performed is communicated.
