The present disclosure relates to a battery system for powering an electric vehicle. The system includes an array of battery cells, a discharge chamber, and a cover layer disposed between the array of battery cells and the discharge chamber, the cover layer covering the array of battery cells. The cover layer is arranged to generate a local burst at the location of a faulty cell of the array under the influence of effluent discharged from the faulty cell, thereby enabling the effluent to escape into the discharge chamber through the locally burst cover layer.
