Apparatus and methods for harvesting kinetic energy are provided. The device may include a plurality of dielectric elastomeric membranes, a rigid connecting rod, and a mountable support base. The film layer has a funnel shape with a narrow opening portion and a wide peripheral portion. The film layer is adjacent to other film layers having opposite orientations defined by the narrow opening portion and the wide peripheral portion. The narrow opening portion is coupled to a first end portion of the connecting rod. The wide peripheral portion is fixed relative to the support base. Applying a linear force in a first direction at a second end portion of the connecting rod causes at least the first film layer to stretch. Applying the force in a second direction opposite the first direction causes at least a second film layer adjacent the first film layer to stretch.
