In an elevator system (1), a floor terminal (LOPi) can be controlled by a control device (8) according to one of at least two operating modes. A screen device (34) of the floor terminal (LOPi) generates a user interface (38) having functional ranges related to operating modes, in which a separate functional range is determined for each operating mode. A control device (8), which actuates the first floor terminal (LOPi) in accordance with one of the at least two operating modes, determines a local load at the location of the first floor terminal (LOPi). The local load is compared with at least one threshold value determined for the load at the first floor terminal (LOPi) to produce a comparison result. A desired operating mode of the first floor terminal (LOPi) is determined on the basis of the comparison result and the operating mode on which the control device (8) actuates the first floor terminal (LOPi), and the first floor terminal (LOPi) is actuated on the basis of the determined desired operating mode.
