The present disclosure relates to an occupant protection unit (100) for a vehicle, comprising an adjustable steering device (104) configured to be lockable in at least a first position (P1) and a second position (P2), an instrument panel (106), an airbag module (108) comprising at least an airbag (110), a collision control unit, and a retraction mechanism, the retraction mechanism is configured to initiate a movement of the steering device (104) in a retraction direction (R), the collision control unit is configured to release the movement of the steering device (104) at least in the retraction direction (R) upon detection of a risk of collision or an impending collision, the collision control unit is configured to activate the retraction mechanism, and the collision control unit is configured to deploy the airbag (110) in the event of an impending collision. The present disclosure also relates to a vehicle comprising such an occupant protection unit (100) and a method (200) for controlling such an occupant protection unit (100).
