The invention provides a motorized wheel assembly. The motorized wheel assembly includes an in-hub motor including a stator and a rotor. The shaft is connected with a stator of the motor in the hub. The motorized wheel assembly also includes a hub attached to the rotor and configured to rotate with the rotor. A hub is disposed about the shaft and the in-hub brake system. The wheel assembly also includes a tire disposed about the hub. The motorized wheel assembly also includes an in-hub braking system disposed about the shaft. The in-hub brake system includes a biasing system, an actuator plate, a brake plate, and a brake pad system. A biasing system is configured to bias the actuator plate to the engaged position to cause the brake pad system to apply a force to the brake plate to prevent rotation of the hub and tire.
