An automatic rain response system includes a loudspeaker of a vehicle, a windshield wiper, and a controller. The loudspeaker generates an acoustic signal in response to rain. The controller is configured to receive a local weather condition, extract an acoustic feature from the acoustic signal, form a feature vector in response to the acoustic feature and the local weather condition, classify the feature vector to determine a current category among a plurality of categories, and determine a heavy rain category in response to the current category being a heavy rain category on the windshield. In one embodiment, the method includes activating the windshield wiper at a high speed, activating the windshield wiper at an intermediate speed in response to a current category being a freezing rain category on the windshield, activating the windshield wiper at a low speed in response to the current category being a light rain category on the windshield, and deactivating the windshield wiper in response to the current category being a rain-free category.
