The invention relates to a method and a system for emergency operation of a modular multilevel converter. The modular multilevel converter includes a central controller and a plurality of battery modules. A respective switching state is given by the central controller to a respective battery module during each switching stroke, by means of which a respective energy accumulator is connected to a respective energy accumulator of a respective adjacent battery module. And the corresponding fault energy accumulator is reported to the central controller through module monitoring. For a respective battery module having a faulty energy store, a bypass switching state (210, 220) is determined at each further switching path. If a threshold defined by a specified number of faulty accumulators permissible by operation of the modular multilevel converter is exceeded, an emergency operation is caused, comprising at least the steps of: changing the operating state from the "operating mode" to the "maintenance mode"; displaying the change to a "service mode" in an operator display; the further operating time is limited until the service begins.
