The invention relates to a method for adapting a counterweight (106) of an elevator system (100), comprising: generating control commands for actuating an electric motor (110) in such a way that a traveling body (104) coupled to the counterweight performs at least one first, second, third and fourth test stroke, in which the traveling body travels from a first position to a second position, respectively, in the first and third test strokes, and in which the traveling body travels from a second position to a third position, respectively, in the second and third test strokes; the driving body is driven from the first position to the second position in a first and a fourth test stroke, and the driving body is driven from the second position to the first position in a second and a fourth test stroke, the driving body is loaded with a counterweight (126) in the third and fourth test stroke, and the driving body is not loaded with the counterweight in the first and the second test stroke; during each test stroke, in a plurality of consecutive time steps, current measurement data and height measurement data are received, the current measurement data representing the current flowing through the electric motor measured by the current measuring device (124) when the driving body is traveling, and the height measurement data representing the current flowing through the electric motor measured by the current measuring device (124) when the driving body is traveling. The height measurement data represents a height of the traveling body relative to the first and/or second position measured by the height measuring device (122) when the traveling body is traveling; calculating at least one parameter of a calibration function defining a relationship between the current, the height and the counterweight using the current measurement data and the height measurement data received during different test strokes to obtain at least one calibration value; and calculating an adaptation value in order to adapt the counterweight when the at least one calibration value is applied, thereby balancing the counterweight with the driving body (104).
